TRAVEL

With an infant or baby:

Check list

  • Sarong
  • Empty bottle/sippy cups
  • Wipes
  • 3x the number of diapers you think you need
  • Tylenol
  • 3 outfits for baby
  • 1 for you
  • Chew toys
  • Binky
  • Cheerios
  • Cooked pasta – small shells or elbow

Detail:

If there are two of you and a baby, I don't think you need a stroller. One of you can carry the stuff and the other can carry the baby. If you were alone or had two kids then a stroller is a must.

I would never take a cheap umbrella stroller. They always break. If you are going to get an umbrella type - get a Maclaren. They are the best and will last you for 5 to 6 years or more. They have a sunshade and a wind/rain guard. They are expensive, but totally worth it. They are really durable and you can carry a lot of packages, etc. They also fold up nice and compact.

Bring a couple of changes of clothes for the baby and you on the plane. I have been puked on more than once in a plane. Wear loose pants - no jeans. If you have to go to the bathroom carrying the infant, it's hard to zip and button.

Nurse/bottle feed the tyke going up and coming down - helps with the ears. Bring a couple of extra empty bottles for water. You can buy water inside the airport but you can't bring it in through security with you. Airline service sucks - so don't count on them for water. Make sure you drink a lot of water or you might decrease your milk supply.

Bring a big bag of Cheerios. Do NOT bring teething biscuits. They make a terrible mess.
Figure out how many diapers you will need and then double that number. Bring more wipes than you think you will need also.

Giving the baby Benadryl before take-off can backfire. A lot of times it makes little babies really irritated rather than drowsy. Be sure to test-drive any antihistamines before the day of travel.

None of my kids liked the Baby Bjorn. They all preferred the sling. Use one or the other. It will save your arms and back. Test this before day of travel too.

Dress them lightly, but layered. Planes sometimes get really hot and hot babies get really, really, really cranky.

Bring baby Tylenol and any other medications they might need on the plane.
Bring a bunch of empty zip lock quart and gallon size bags. They will hold wet/sticky/smelly things until you can wash them and not contaminate the rest of your diaper bag.

If you have a sarong - that is awesome for travel. It rolls up small and doesn't take up as much space as a blanket.

Bring extra socks. Babies always lose socks.

There are new travel regulations with liquids and gels. You can bring on prescriptions and baby formula that are more than 3 oz. Verify this information before you travel. Regulations seem to change regularly. (www.tsa.gov)

Do you use formula? Isomil, Similac and Enfamil have travel sized individual packets you can buy. I always found them at Rite Aid.

Tip:

If all else fails,
smile and nod.
